Shillong, Jul 9: Boko–Chaygaon MLA Raju Mesh has raised concerns over rampant illegal tree felling reported by residents of Lampi village (known as Langpih to the Khasis) along the disputed Assam-Meghalaya border during the ongoing budget session of the Assam Legislative Assembly.
According to Mesh, locals alleged that vehicles from Meghalaya were entering Assam, cutting down trees, and transporting timber back across the border. He said he visited the area on July 3 and discovered several felled trees along the roadside. Despite personnel at the border outpost being aware of the illegal smuggling, lack of resources, including basic patrol vehicles, prove challenging to prevent such activities, he said.
The BJP MLA emphasised the urgent need for action, suggesting that a vehicle be provided to improve surveillance and reduce illegal tree felling incidents.
In addition, Mesh highlighted the poor living conditions faced by the residents of the village. He said many villagers lack land pattas, rendering them ineligible for essential welfare schemes. Furthermore, the absence of basic civic amenities, such as a clean potable water supply and mobile connectivity, exacerbates their situation, he added.
Minister of Agriculture Pijush Hazarika acknowledged the developmental needs of the area.
