In another instance of suspected aggression by Assam, residents of Barapathar in Ri-Bhoi today demanded the arrest of those guilty of vandalising signboards put up for an MGNREGS project implemented by the Meghalaya government.
On Sunday, people from Assam came in a group to Barapathar and dismantled a signboard put up by the local Village Employment Council for a footpath constructed under the national rural employment guarantee scheme while claiming that the land in question belongs to Assam.
The Barapathar residents and village elders also claimed that many developmental projects undertaken by the Meghalaya government were derailed by Assam.
Border Magistrate R Kharbihkhiew, Block Development Officer R Nongrum and Ri-Bhoi police went to the site today to reassure the locals and ensure that law and order were maintained.
