Class 9 students of Shullai Progressive School in Mawlai Mawroh were invited to the depot at the Food Corporation of India (FCI) here today.
The purpose of the visit was to showcase the role and function of the FCI in storage of food grains and in delivery of these to the state government. During this visit, the students were briefed on the role of the FCI in the movement of food grains in the country and especially on the movement of rice into Meghalaya from elsewhere; use of depot online system (DOS) for all depot operations at FCI as well as real time weight capture through integration of the lorry weighbridge with DOS; the different steps and processes in the storage of food grains at the depot right from the time of receipt until being issued to the state government; the different steps of quality control and grain preservation to ensure that good quality food grains are being distributed to the state; and the introduction of fortified rice kernels (FRK) with the aim being the alleviation of malnutrition and in prevention of many deficiency diseases.
