Two Meghalaya-based pressure groups, the Khasi Students Union (KSU) and Garo Students Union (GSU) have demanded justice for a woman who was assaulted in a viral video recently.
The woman was brutally tortured, stripped and sexually abused by five suspects. The location of the incident and the timing of it are not clear, neither is the identity of the victim or the perpetrators. It has not yet been ascertained if the girl belongs to the North East, though her identity has been read as such.
Today evening, Bangladesh police claimed that the victim and at least one of the culprits was from the neighbouring country, though the incident took place in India.
Earlier, the KSU’s Delhi unit wrote to Union Home Minister Amit Shah to condemn the incident and demand that the perpetrators – four men and a woman – be arrested and punished.
GSU president Zikku Balgra N Marak also denounced the assault and said that such crimes cannot be tolerated.
Indian Police Service officer in New Delhi, Robin Hibu, said efforts are on to identify the woman and identify the suspects.
He also clarified that the video is not related to the recent suicide of a woman from Nagaland in Jodhpur.
