Shillong, Apr 17: Khliehriat MLA Kyrmen Shylla visited seven villages within his constituency that are struggling with severe water shortages.
During his visit, Shylla highlighted the challenges faced by these communities and the efforts required to address their critical needs.
Shylla pointed out that villagers have identified a potential water source in Rangad village, which is expected to significantly enhance water supply for the affected areas. He expressed confidence that the proposal to develop this new water source would be met with approval, allowing for necessary funding from the authorities.
Despite ongoing projects intended to improve water access, Shylla acknowledged that these initiatives would not completely satisfy the water demand for every household in the villages.
While Meghalaya retains much of its natural greenery, Shylla said due to the hilly terrain it is difficult to retain the water.
He emphasised the importance of protecting catchment areas and constructing additional dams, initiatives that the government is currently pursuing. However, he also noted that significant work remains to be done to uncover viable long-term solutions for drinking water shortages.
Shylla said that residents of Moolamanoh are resorting to purchasing water, incurring high costs that highlight the urgent need for intervention.
