A three-day training programme on ‘Sustainable Dairy Farming Practices’ was organised by ICAR – Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Tura June 11 to 13.
The training was organised to impart knowledge to the farmers of West Garo Hills who are engaged in dairy farming and who need technological support to increase milk production.
The growth of the dairy sector in the North East region is not up to the mark as the tribal population in the region does not prefer milk in their diet, a press release stated today. “However, with the increased awareness of the positive contribution of milk as a wholesome food item for all, it has now made its entry into the tribal people’s diet, enhancing, thereby, the scope of milk production in the region,” it added.
With greater demand comes the need for greater supply and technological support such as this programme, for which 17 farmers attended.
During the inaugural session, Monica Sing, Head of the KVK, emphasised on fodder production to reduce feed cost as well as to provide cows required vitamins and minerals to increase milk production. KVK scientist Tarun Kumar Das explained about entrepreneurial development through dairy farming.
Another scientist, Ramawater Yadav, also addressed the participants and encouraged them to rear good cattle breeds to get more milk production. One dairy entrepreneur, Baplu A Sangma from Rombagre village, was felicitated during the inaugural function and shared his inspiring journey through dairy farming.
All the technical sessions were led by resource person Sagarika Borah. Participants visited the KVK’s dairy farm, fodder farm and azolla (an aquatic fern used in dairy feed) production unit for practical demonstrations. Vitamins, mineral mixtures, medicines, azolla and fodder planting materials were distributed among the participants.
