Shillong, Jun 23: The state government will soon start rolling out two-wheeler taxi operator and aggregator licences, Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, who holds the Transport portfolio, informed today.
Dhar said a meeting has been scheduled for next week to finalise the process, after which licences will be issued to eligible applicants whose documents meet the required criteria.
“I will be holding a meeting next week. After that, within 10 days to two weeks, licences will be issued to applicants, whether individuals or aggregators, provided their documents are in order. These will be state-level licences,” he said.
The minister also said the Transport Department has been directed to step up enforcement against bike taxis operating without valid licences.
“I have instructed officials to strengthen enforcement on the ground and take action against those operating illegally,” Dhar said.
He added that the department is still gathering data on applications and compliance. The exact number of licences issued will be available only after the licensing process is fully implemented.
“Information is still being collected. Once the system is fully operational, we will be able to provide details on the number of licences issued,” he said.
National aggregators like Rapido and their drivers have repeatedly appeared on the government’s radar for operating without state permission. One local aggregator, JETS, has received a licence, however.
