Moved by the plight of a girl who lost both of her arms through no fault of her own, the Association of Power Engineers (AOPE) today donated Rs 1 lakh to the victim, who lives in Mawkohphet, South West Khasi Hills.
On April 21, nursery student Ibapynhun Iawphniaw was electrocuted after coming into contact with an unfenced transformer near her school. The severity of her injuries meant that both her arms had to be amputated.
Various quarters condemned the apparent negligence of the Meghalaya Power Distribution Corporation Ltd (MePDCL), which did not ensure that the transformer was fenced or walled away.
The AOPE represents engineers employed by the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Ltd (MeECL).
