Personnel of the Border Security Force (BSF) Meghalaya rescued a total of 37 cattle meant to be smuggled into Bangladesh in two separate operations.
The 172nd Battalion of the BSF, operating on the international border in East Jaintia HIlls, seized 20 cattle on Sunday. The BSF mobile checkpost deployed at Ratacherra attempted to stop a suspicious truck proceeding towards Umkiang from Kalain in Assam. The truck driver, however, tried to speed away and the BSF gave chase for around 10km before intercepting it at Umkiang petrol pump.
Twenty cattle were found in the back of the truck, though the driver fled into the night.
In the other operation, troops of the 4th Battalion seized 17 cattle from the area of Rongtilla while being smuggled to Bangladesh. The seized cattle were handed over to the local police station for further action.
Since January, the BSF has seized 1,669 cattle on Meghalaya’s border with Bangladesh, the force said in a release today.
