A one-day seminar cum workshop on sensitisation of drugs, HIV and AIDS was organised by the English and Foreign Languages University, Shillong in collaboration with Meghalaya Aids Control Society and Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority.
The aim of the workshop was to sensitize participants about the dangers of drug use, the spread of HIV and AIDS and to discuss effective ways to prevent and manage these issues.
The workshop, which was held on March 24, brought together experts in the field of drug abuse and HIV/AIDS, health practitioners, policy makers, and members of the public to engage in meaningful conversations and share their experiences.
The event was convened by Dr. Caroline Wahlang, Assistant Professor of the Journalism and Mass Communication Department. She spoke about the need for debunking of myths around drugs, HIV and Aids and the need to hold such important events for students. The guests were felicitated by the students with token of appreciation.
Director of the university, Prof Mousumi Guha Banerjee gave the welcome speech where she addressed the need for such a workshop at a time when drug abuse is increasing unchecked. She also insisted on the importance of being enlightened by the experience and expertise of the guests. We believe that this workshop will provide participants with valuable insights and knowledge that can be applied in their personal and professional lives,” she commented.
Deputy Inspector General of Police (ER) Davis N.R Marak spoke about ‘Geopolitics of drugs and its addiction and its implications on north-east region. He addressed the growing menace of drug in the ‘Golden Triangle’ and the ‘Golden Crescent’ and the role of militant groups in promoting narcotic terrorism.
Drug Users Forum Meghlaya president, Neil Jaitly Khongwir shared his life experience as a former addict and his journey in rehabilitation centre and how he transformed his life to give back to community and help other people in recovery. He has been actively participating in various activities and coordinating with people of various fields to make rehabilitation more accessible to everyone.
He also stressed on ‘Big Brother service’, where like-minded people who have been recovered help others in their journey without judgment. “Re-integration to society, being a good peer, helping others through addiction and reducing the demand for drugs are instrumental in the fight against drugs,” he said.
Advocate L. Khiangte of the Legal Aid Council, Meghalaya State Legal Service Authority (MSLSA) enlightened students about the legal implications of drug abuse. She shared the legal procedures of drug trials and how extreme poverty, unemployment and socio-economic conditions are tools in increasing the drug abuse in the country.
A workshop for students on HIV, AIDS awareness by W. Alexander Kharkongor, Assistant Director, Meghalaya Aids Control Society was also conducted on the same day.
Several competitions and activities were held for students and their activities were displayed to create awareness. Certificates of participation were also presented to the registered students.
