Shillong, Aug 1: Morning Star College, Lawjynriew, in collaboration with ICAR-North Eastern Hill Region, recently organised a one-day workshop on “Prospects and Constraints of Organic Farming in North East India”.
Students, faculty, researchers, farmers and stakeholders from Meghalaya and across the region attended the programme aimed at sharing scientific knowledge and practical experiences on organic farming.
ICAR-NEHR Scientist Dr. Niraj Biswakarma in his keynote sessions highlighted the region’s potential for organic agriculture and stressed the need for scientific advancements, research findings and policy support to strengthen sustainable practices.
Senior Scientist Dr. Badapmain Makdoh spoke on organic and natural faming. He said the growing demand for organic produce offers young people and farmers viable avenues for entrepreneurship, income generation and rural development.
BRDC Junior Scientist Dr. Sophie P. Majaw presented on “Organic Certification: Principles, Standards and Certification Process,” explaining procedures needed for farmers to access premium organic markets and ensure consumer confidence.
The technical sessions ended with an interactive discussion where participants raised questions on practical challenges and prospects of organic farming in the North East.
Organisers said such programmes are essential to promote sustainable agriculture, build scientific awareness and encourage greater adoption of organic farming in the region.
