Shillong, Jul 30: The Hynñiewtrep Youth Development Council (HYDC) has sought stricter checks on livestock movement after a Mahindra pickup, ML 05 AD 5108, was allegedly intercepted under Mawryngkneng Police Station for transporting cattle in grossly overcrowded conditions.
HYDC said the animals were packed beyond permissible limits with inadequate space and ventilation, causing stress and risk of injury. Citing the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 and Transport of Animals Rules, 1978, the council noted that transport must include proper space, food, water and valid veterinary documents.
While welcoming police action in the case, HYDC flagged illegal cattle transport through the state as a larger concern. It urged authorities to investigate the Mawryngkneng incident, verify transport permits and health certificates, and step up enforcement on highways and entry points.
“Respect for the rule of law and humane treatment of animals must be upheld at all times,” HYDC said, adding that citizens should report suspected cases of illegal transport or cruelty to police.
