Additional cracks have reappeared in the Sonapur bridge on the Jowai-Ratacherra Highway, which is currently undergoing repairs, due to heavy traffic.
This has prompted the East Jaiñtia Hills district magistrate to pass an order to regulate traffic in the area.
The regulation will come into force from tomorrow. From February 19 to 22 only light motor vehicles will be allowed during the repair works. The road will remain closed from March 2 to March 4 for all types of vehicles for load testing on the bridge, the order said.
Regulation of traffic is necessitated to prevent any disaster and safety of the commuters, the district magistrate added.
Renovation works of the bridge is being undertaken by the National Highway Authority of India. The bridge is lifeline for Assam, Tripura and Mizoram as it connects Meghalaya with Cachar district in Assam, from where routes to other states passes.
