Shillong, Jul 8: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Wednesday stated that a meeting to discuss the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026 with Union Home Minister Amit Shah was productive.
Sangma recently led a delegation comprising representatives of the Presbyterian Church of India, the North East India Christian Council, the Archdiocese of Shillong and the Garo Baptist Convention. The delegation expressed reservations regarding specific provisions of the bill.
Sangma urged the central government to consider their reservations, particularly how the amendments may affect churches and faith-based charitable institutions.
He told reporters that the state government conveyed the concerns of various Christian organisations in Meghalaya and sought the centre’s support in addressing issues related to the proposed legislation.
Sangma expressed optimism that the issues taken up would receive appropriate attention from the centre.
Sangma said the state government will continue engaging with the centre on issues affecting Meghalaya and expressed hope that the concerns raised during the meeting would receive due consideration. He reiterated the state government’s commitment to ongoing dialogue with the central authorities on matters impacting Meghalaya.
Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar stated that protecting the interests of the Christian community remains a priority for the government.
He praised Sangma and said, “Throughout the country whenever issues are faced by the Christians, people turn to our Chief Minister and we are proud of it.”
