Shillong, Jul 8: The Joint Coordination Committee (JAC) of the FKJGP Upper Shillong Circle and KSU Upper Shillong Circle have demanded the immediate cancellation of the land allotment and lease agreement for a proposed petrol pump located at Hynniew Mer, Upper Shillong.
According to them, the land in question should be utilised for public welfare rather than leased to a private entity. The groups have been vocal in its opposition since 2023 pointing out that the land belongs to the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department and it should serve the interests of the public rather than satisfy a private business’s needs.
A delegation of the JAC on Wednesday met with Director of Urban Affairs Prafulla Kumar Boro with the demand.
Speaking to reporters, FKJGP Upper Shillong general secretary Kitboklang Nongphlang questioned the government’s decision to push forward with the proposal despite public disapproval.
The groups argue that local Khasi contractors are being excluded from significant government projects, calling for the land to be repurposed for livestock-related infrastructure that would directly benefit local farmers and residents.
