Fewer than 20 per cent of hospital beds reserved for Covid-19 patients in Meghalaya are now occupied, giving a welcome breather to medical staff who have been at the forefront of combatting the disease.
According to government data, 204 out of 1,087 Covid beds are occupied in the state, which works out to 18.77 percent, the lowest this figure has been since the second wave took hold.
Coronavirus infections and deaths have been on the decline since last month and Meghalaya has been reopening schools, tourism, etc as a result.
However, the number of Covid tests being carried out has also fallen. In the first eight days of September the average is 3,550, which is low compared to previous months where the average has been over 4,000 per day.
Vaccination rates have also declined this month to an average of 5,100 a day. This is less than half of July’s average of 11,170. Meghalaya still has a long way to go in terms of getting the Covid-19 jab into its population – currently only 51.38 per cent of the target populace has received at least one dose.
