Shillong, Aug 10: Kwis Sumer of Muktapur village, West Jaiñtia Hills, who went missing on July 15, 2026 after travelling to Karnataka for work, was safely traced and brought back to Meghalaya on Monday following a two-week interstate search operation.
The case was taken up by the state government after a memorandum was submitted on July 27. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma coordinated with the Government of Karnataka to mobilise agencies for the search.
A Meghalaya Police team led by Lovish Garg, travelled to Bengaluru with representatives of Sumer’s clan. The team coordinated with senior Karnataka Police officers, including the DGP & IGP, DIG(A) Iada Martin Marbaniang, and concerned SPs to trace his last known movements using technical inputs.
A breakthrough came when Sumer contacted his family through social media with the help of Kavi Kumar, who had sheltered him. Acting on the information, Meghalaya and Karnataka Police jointly located him at Tiptur in Tumkur district. He was taken into official care and arrangements were made for his return.
In Shillong, Sumer was received by family and clan members before being taken to Muktapur.
Sumer and his clan expressed gratitude to the Chief Minister for facilitating his return. “The help of Karnataka Police, especially Bengaluru Police, and the hard work of Meghalaya Police ensured he was found and brought back safely,” the Chief Minister said.
The Chief Minister’s office acknowledged the Karnataka Police for cooperation, the Meghalaya Police team, civil society groups, Dr. D. Rockyer L. Nonglait for initial coordination, and Kavi Kumar for providing shelter and enabling contact.
Officials said the case highlights effective interstate police coordination and community support in tracing missing persons.
