The state government has no plan to reintroduce a lockdown in Meghalaya but the Covid-19 situation is still nowhere near good enough to expect a return to normality.
“The situation is not good at all,” Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, who took over the health portfolio last week, said today. “So, I would request every citizen of the state to take care of themselves and I would like to request all to get themselves vaccinated.”
The seven-day average of Covid cases is 572, with deaths from the disease averaging 11 in the last seven days.
With the pandemic now 18 months old, it is far from new. “You have been trained well, so there is a need to take care,” the minister said.
Recently, there were reports that the North East states might have to brace for strict containment measures, including lockdowns, under the National Disaster Management Act 2005 by the Centre in view of the rising Covid-19 cases despite continued efforts by the respective state governments.
