Fifty percent of all hospital beds allocated to the care of Covid-19 patients in Meghalaya are currently occupied, according to data from the Health Department.
There are 1,070 beds in hospitals and health centres around the state, of which 536 are currently in use.
The occupancy rate is still a lot lower than it was at the height of the second wave in May, when three in every four beds were occupied.
Nevertheless, the recent sharp rise in new Covid cases over the last few days has also resulted in increased pressure on the health institutions.
On July 16 there were only 361 coronavirus patients in Meghalaya’s hospitals, but this has risen by 48 percent since then. The number of beds for Covid care has actually decreased in that same period, from 1,096 to 1,070.
