Khliehriat, May 28: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma laid the foundation stones for three road projects in the East Jaintia Hills district to bolster connectivity and accessibility throughout the region, with an investment of nearly Rs 488 crore.
The projects are the upgrade of the Dkhiah-Sutnga-Saipung-Pala-Semmasi road, which stretches over 58.1 km and is estimated to cost Rs 355 crore. This initiative is part of the Meghalaya Logistics and Connectivity Improvement Project funded by the World Bank.
Another project includes the improvement of the Dkhiah-Sutnga-Saipung-Moulsei-Haflong road, which covers 8.8 km and will be funded through the Central Road Infrastructure Fund (CRIF) at a cost of Rs 10.3 crore. Additionally, local access to Chympe Waterfalls will be enhanced through a new approach road, along with the improvement of the Sutnga-Khaddum road spanning 22.7 km, which is financed under the SIDBI Cluster Development Fund at Rs 46.75 crore.
The Shkemtalang (NH-206) to Lumshyrmit road will feature a major bridge over the Myntdu River, linking NH-6 at Kongong. This 18.64 km project is being executed under the North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme (NESIDS).
In his address, the chief minister said that the road projects will improve connectivity in the region while boosting economic activity while facilitating access to essential services like healthcare and education.
Sangma said the tender for the road projects has already been called, with construction expected to commence within 45 days.
Highlighting Meghalaya’s position as one of the fastest-growing economies in the world, he assured that the benefits of economic development would extend across all regions of the state, promoting overall well-being and sustainability.
On the coal mining ban, Sangma said the government has been continuously working to lift the ban on coal mining and promote scientific mining practices in compliance with legal procedures.
He also said discussions with the Centre were underway to ensure sustainable mining practices that balance environmental concerns with the interests of both large and small miners.
The chief minister also announced support for the construction of an indoor stadium in Latyrke and other beneficial projects for villagers.
Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, local MLAs Santa Mary Shylla and Kyrmen Shylla, officials of the Public Works Department and district administration representatives were present during the programmes.
