East Khasi Hills police informed today that a total of eight people have been arrested in connection with last month’s Golf Links assault and murder case.
All eight who have been detained are tribals, Superintendent of Police Sylvester Nongtnger informed through a press release. No names or further details about the suspects were released.
It was on the evening of March 21 that two males were assaulted in Golf Links by unknown persons following a dispute. One of the victims, Phershanroy Marthong, of Wahkaji, South West Khasi Hills, subsequently succumbed to his injuries on March 28.
The assault and murder threatened to take on communal overtones, but police and ministers denied that there was a communal angle.
A special investigation team was set up on March 29 to identify the perpetrators of the crime.
