Khliehriat, Sep 21: East Jaintia Hills Police seized 3,286 bottles of codeine-laced Vincof-Plus cough syrup in back-to-back anti-drug operations on NH-6.
The operation began on September 16 with the arrest of two Assam residents transporting 2,244 bottles towards Silchar.
Acting on credible input, police set up a naka in front of Umkiang Patrol Post under Lumshnong PS. At around 12:15 am, two Maruti Swift Dzire cars were intercepted – white AS 11 Q 0114 driven by Sanjib Kumar Kanu (26) of Durga Nagar, Cachar, and golden AS 01 BE 6993 driven by Saidul Islam Barbhuya (34) of Gosaipur Pt-II, Cachar.
Police recovered 15 cartons containing 2,244 bottles of Vincof-Plus (100 ml each) – 1,195 bottles from the white Dzire and 1,049 bottles from the golden Dzire. The duo was arrested.
In a follow-up, on September 17 at around 5:20 pm, police received information about a vehicle lying abandoned at Kuliang village suspected to be part of the same network. A team rushed to the spot and found a third Swift Dzire AS 11 H 0671 (white) parked in an isolated area.
On search, another seven cartons containing 1,042 bottles of the syrup were found concealed in the back seat and dickey.
The contraband was seized after preliminary test with all formalities in presence of independent witnesses, police said.
