For the first time in the State, the World Kidney Day was today observed with an aim to create awareness on the importance of kidneys, reducing the impact and frequency of the disease.
The day was marked by the Nephrology department of Woodland Hospital under the theme, “Kidney Health for All”.
An awareness procession was held from the hospital premises to the Shillong Civil Hospital which was participated by the staff of and students of the hospital, students from the Oscar M. Memorial Secondary School, Law-U-Sib and others.
The procession as led by first Nephrologist Dr Indakiewlin Kharbuli and senior medicine specialist, Rittwick Barman.
Dr. Kharbuli said the aim of the program was to spread awareness to the people about the preventive behaviour of kidney disease and about the risk factors causing this disease.
She said that kidney disease is a silent killer as some patients with kidney-related problems don’t show any symptoms. Informing that kidney disease can be treated with early intervention she said people who does show signs like pain in the abdomen, redness of skin, joint pain should immediately get checked.
Some of the common preventive factors as highlighted by Dr. Kharbuli is to drink two liters of water every day, avoid eating red meat, soda or soft drinks.
This day was celebrated with the joint initiative that has been started by the International Society Nephrology and the International Federation of Kidney Foundation.
