Meghalaya State Commission for Women member, Violet Lyngdoh today stated that women in the State are already empowered being a matrilineal society.
Speaking at a function to celebrate International Women’s Day at Chiehruphi village in East Jaiñtia Hills district today, Lyngdoh said women are holding a special place and playing important roles in their family and in the society. She urged women to uphold their dignity and mutual respect and said there is a need for unity, respect, encouragement and a hand of support towards one another for the betterment of the society.
The programme was organised by the office of the District Social Welfare Officer, East Jaintia Hills District under the theme “Gender Equality Today for a Sustainable Tomorrow”.
District Social Welfare Officer, R. Passah said the government through the Social Welfare Department has launched various welfare schemes in an effort to empower women. She further spoke on Self Help Groups being the support system and a platform for women to come forward and take part in developmental activities in their respective villages.
She also called for support from all women’s groups in the implementation of government welfare schemes, which are key in uplifting their life and enhancing what they can achieve.
Other topics covered during the programme include “Domestic Violence Act, OSC Schemes and Services” presented by D. Lyngdoh, Lawyer, One Stop Centre (OSC), Khliehriat and “Role of women in the family” by Sr. Maria Nongrum, FMA, Day Care Centre for Senior Citizens.
