A 52-year old woman was stabbed allegedly by her husband in front of her daughter, in a case of domestic violence in the home of a well-to-do business family of the city.
The woman has been admitted to the woman’s ward of Shillong Civil Hospital after the crime yesterday at around 11:30 am.
Police are yet to arrest the man identified as Suresh Prasad Singh till filing of this report.
Speaking to Highland Post, the woman said she had been subjected to domestic violence for years and police has never registered an FIR. She said Singh is a repeat offender and has powerful links.
Narrating about the incident yesterday, she said they had an argument when he did not give money to buy groceries. She alleged that Singh was entertaining other women in the house when she was out in Guwahati to accompany her children for coaching classes for higher studies. When she protested over this, he stabbed her once in the stomach.
She further said after the incident she managed to call the officer in charge of Laban police station, who immediately took her to the hospital.
In September last she was allegedly attacked by Singh and received three stitches on her elbow. Even then, the woman said, her FIR was never registered by the Laban Police Station.
According to sources, some years back she had sought the help of the State Women’s Commission. The case was kept on hold after she had left the city with her children.
On this, the woman said in March 2017 the commission had sent her to psychological counselling. “I had refused because I was not even mentally ill and I have to take care of my children who were very young and we stayed in Guwahati for them to pursue with their studies. He (husband) then used the note from the commission telling people that I was not mentally stable,” she alleged.
Meanwhile, police have registered a case against Singh under Section 324 of the IPC. It is also learnt that members of the commission are expected to visit the woman soon and re-look into the case.
