Mawtngam village under South West Khasi Hills district is a historical village which has got the honour of being the village of the famous freedom fighter, U Sngap Sing Syiem.
What ails the village is the lack of a road. Yet, when it was about to be connected, funds sanctioned through the Border Area Department ran short.
According to the Khasi Students Union, South West Khasi Hills district, the department had sanctioned funds for the road project from Nongeitser to Mawtngam but the amount could cover only 1.2 kms.
The union along with its Mawkyrwat circle and the village elders decided to carry out earthworks for construction of another 1.4 kms of the road to honour the legacy of U Sngap Sing Syiem.
KSU-South West Khasi Hills president Forwardman Nongrem said, “The village is famous for the memorial of our freedom fighter U Sngap Sing Syiem and hence we have decided to do some earthworks in Mawtngam as contribution to ease the conditions of people.”
He said they could manage a meagre amount to pave way for the road construction; it is duty-bound for the government to construct a proper road for Mawtngam and Nongeitser.
