Shillong, May 20: Vehicle owners have been directed to maintain accurate vehicle records by executing ownership transfer documents during the sale or purchase of a vehicle at the district transport office.
Authorities said there is a growing trend where the ownership of vehicles is not officially recorded after their sale or purchase, which can lead to several issues, including complications in tracking vehicle history and accountability in case of accidents, traffic violations, or criminal activities.
As per Section 50 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 both sellers and purchasers are to ensure completion of the transfer process, the East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police said.
Violation can result in penalties and legal repercussions under the Act.
All vehicle owners are advised to ensure proper execution of ownership transfer documents, submit all required forms and fees to the relevant registering authority and to verify that the registration certificate (RC) reflects the updated ownership information.
The SP said strict enforcement is being carried out regularly through mobile courts and traffic enforcement drives across the district. The public have been urged to cooperate in order to ensure accountability, and promote road safety.
