Nongpoh/Jowai, Aug 20: Amid the ongoing Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) agitation, the Ri-Bhoi district administration has ordered the closure of all IMFL retail shops and bars on August 20 and 21 as a precautionary measure to maintain peace and public order.
Deputy Commissioner Dr Abhishek Saini said the temporary closure aims to prevent untoward incidents linked to alcohol consumption.
In West Jaintia Hills, the District Magistrate has banned the sale and distribution of petrol and diesel in loose quantities with immediate effect until further orders.
The order, issued under Section 223 of the BNS, follows the KSU rally on August 19 and concerns over possible escalation.
The administration cited public safety, protection of property, and risks of fire and disruption. Sale in jerry cans, bottles and other containers without authorization is prohibited. Violators face action under BNS and relevant laws.
However, diesel supply for mobile towers and road construction companies will continue as per standing orders.
A similar order restricting loose fuel sales was also issued in East Jaintia Hills on August 19.
