The general secretary of the A’chik Youth Council (AYC), Maxbirth Gabil Momin, has written to the Chief Minister to express “deep concern” over the controversial proposal to expand the jurisdiction of the Tura Municipal Board (TMB) into Sixth Schedule areas.
Momin urged for the plan to be cancelled as it undermines the “rights and dignity” of the Garo people.
The TMB should not operate at all in Sixth Schedule tribal areas, Momin, opined, but it was entrusted with civil works by the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC).
Yesterday, GHADC members, cutting across party lines, unanimously opposed the state government’s move to expand the jurisdiction of the TMB by including A’king land under its remit as part of the proposed Tura draft master plan.
