The Post Graduate Students’ Union (PGSU) on the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) Tura campus has supported the appointment of Prof Fameline K Marak as the new Pro Vice-Chancellor.
PGSU president Chakram D Sangma said in a release today that the union extends “its sincerest gratitude and appreciation” on the appointment of Marak as the Pro VC of NEHU Tura.
“This highly anticipated appointment meets a need that has gone unfulfilled for almost four years when our campus has been operated under the direction of a Director-in-Charge,” Sangma said. “Although the Director-in-Charge was responsible for carrying out the operations of the campus, the role had built-in restrictions, especially in decision-making at the university headquarters.”
With Marak’s appointment, NEHU Tura now has a direct representative in the university’s major decision-making forums, Sangma added, and actively engage in policy matters, plead the case for the campus and work towards solving longstanding issues “that have hampered our academic and infrastructural development.”
The PGSU, which pledged to work together with the Pro VC, said that despite being in existence for 29 years, NEHU Tura grapples with “meagre infrastructure, poor hostel accommodations, irregular faculty and non-teaching staff recruitment, lack of basic departmental buildings and an inadequacy of lab equipment.”
