Jowai, May 21: Civil Hospitals in Shillong, Tura and Jowai will receive upgrades to the tune of Rs 500 crore, Health and Family Welfare Minister Wailadmiki Shylla said yesterday.
Shylla was speaking during the distribution of essential medical equipment to various health centres across West Jaintia Hills.
The receiving institutions were health sub-centres, primary health centres, community health centres and the Jowai Civil Hospital. The minister also handed over growth monitoring devices to selected Aganwadi centres under the Thadlaskein, Laskein and Amlarem ICDS centres along with play material aimed at promoting overall development of children.
The equipment and material were procured with the financial assistance from the Power Finance Corp Ltd under its corporate social responsibility (CRS) scheme at an estimated cost of Rs 5.8 crore. The initiative was made possible through the effort of the Deputy Commissioner of West Jaintia Hills along with the Health Minister, who is also the local MLA of Jowai constituency.
In a speech, the minister said the government has also sanctioned around Rs 53 crore for upgradation of Ummulong CHC into an ‘Integrated Hospital’. He also informed that 50 more beds will be added in the upgraded hospital with an objective of reducing the burden on Jowai Civil Hospital.
He further informed that the government is also planning to expand three civil hospitals in Shillong, Tura and Jowai with an estimated expenditure of nearly Rs 500 crore.
He also informed that Jowai Civil Hospital will soon get an MRI machine, adding that the tender has already been completed.
