Shillong, Oct 8: Employees of the Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) and police carried out an eviction drive today evening to stop street vendors selling goods on the public way at Jail Road.
The raid was in accordance with the order banning hawkers from placing and spreading goods on footpaths.
As the police and SMB team arrived, there was a clash with the hawkers. Police cordoned off the area where vendors used to sell and restricted entry to the stretch.
Some vendors expressed dissatisfaction with the functioning of the Provisional Town Vending Committee.
They said they had attended the PTVC hearings, but the committee acted arbitrarily and issued certificates of vending (CoV) according to its own will.
The hawkers also demanded compensation from the SMB for their losses. They said due to the sudden crackdown, vegetables and other perishable goods could not be sold and had to be thrown away.
