The residents of Maiong village in Ri-Bhoi today alleged that some people from Assam entered the area and ordered them to leave their homes, claiming that the place belongs to them.
According to reports, a war of words ensued between the local residents and the intruders who had threatened to shoot and use explosives if the villagers did not leave the area.
The villagers alleged that one person by the name of Joyram Sarma from Assam along with a few other persons claiming to be from the surrendered United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) militant group came to the village and started to claim that the area belongs to them.
The protest by villagers of Maiong against the intrusion was led by Ringkumuni Marak, president of the All Meghalaya Garo Women Association.
After Meghalaya Police received information about the intrusion bid, forces from Pilangkata outpost reached the area after which the miscreants fled.
