After more than four decades of dormancy, Raid Nongtham revived the ancient festival of ‘Shad Nohkjat’, a significant cultural and spiritual ceremony deeply rooted in the traditions of the area.
This long-awaited celebration took place at Lum Nongbah, near the village of Pamlaban in Ri-Bhoi, which is part of the Raid Nongtham under the Khyrim Syiemship.
The event was marked by the presence of several distinguished guests, including Dr Balajied Syiem, the Syiem of Hima Khyriem, Mawhati MD Kynjoh Ryntong, T Syiem, the Syiem of Raid Nongtham, village leaders, local residents and others.
During the event, speakers praised T Syiem and the traditional leaders for their efforts in reviving this important cultural practice. They highlighted the significance of the ‘Shad Nohkjat’ as a traditional ritual handed down through generations, expressing gratitude for the commitment to preserve this heritage.
The speakers also encouraged the Syiem, elders and village leaders to continue this tradition in the future, stating that such festivals play a critical role in preserving the cultural identity and ancestral customs of Raid Nongtham.
The day was further enlivened by enthusiastic participation from the younger generation, who showcased various traditional rituals. Traditional dancers from Hima Khyrim also performed, adding a vibrant touch to the celebrations, reflecting the enduring cultural spirit of the community.
