Police are trying to ascertain the exact circumstances in the case of a pregnant woman who was found dead last night at her home in Mawlai Nongmali.
The 30-year-old woman was two months pregnant and was found lying dead on her bed at her residence with ligature (strangulation) marks on her neck at 10pm yesterday.
However, family members doubt that she took her own life as she appeared to be mentally well and because there was no ceiling fan or other high point in the room she was found in for her to have hung herself.
Instead, the family suspect that her husband, who she had married just a few months back, had strangled her.
They stated that the deceased would often reach out to her sister through messages, sharing stories about her husband’s alleged affairs with his ex-wife.
The family members stated that when they were informed about the incident, they immediately rushed to her house and found her lying dead on the bed. They also found that the walls were scribbled with notes explaining the husband’s alleged affairs.
The victim’s sister filed a complaint with Mawlai police. Police then arrested the man believed to be the husband.
Meanwhile the Civil Society Women’s Organisation (CSWO) demanded that cases of violence and murder should not be left lingering in Meghalaya and that such perpetrators of violence should not be given bail.
