Social Welfare Minister Paul Lyngdoh in the presence of Law Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh today released the Khasi translation, Ki kyndon ain, of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act 2012 here today.
Addressing the gathering, Paul said that childhood should be a golden era of everyone’s life but that not all can share that joy, which is why it is so pertinent that lawmakers and stakeholders come together to combat the evil sexual offences against children.
He also described it as a landmark day for the Khasi language as, for the first time since the creation of the Khasi alphabet in 1841, a national law has been translated into the Khasi tongue.
With the support of civil society and with this law now available in Khasi, the act will reach every doorstep and no one will be able to plead ignorance to escape the clutches of the law.
During the programme, the Meghalaya State Commission for Protection of Child Rights also released the calendar and a preliminary report on POCSO cases in the courts of Meghalaya.
