Shillong, Jul 2: The Hynñiewtrep Integrated Territorial Organisation (HITO) has formally lodged a complaint with the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB) against RNB Cement in Umiam for environmental violations.
According to HITO, substantial quantities of clinker dust and thick smoke are being emitted, leading to damaging impacts on air quality.
Expressing serious concerns over the emissions from the cement factory, HITO leader Donbok Dkhar stated that emissions have been observed escaping from numerous points other than the designated exhaust chimney, leading to a widespread release of uncontrolled smoke and particulate matter.
He said the emissions have raised alarms among nearby residents regarding their potential impact on public health, agriculture, and the environment. Vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory conditions, are considered at heightened risk if the pollution continues unchecked.
HITO has urged the pollution control board to conduct an immediate inspection of the plant, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations, including the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act of 1981 and the Environment (Protection) Act of 1986. They requested
Dkhar emphasised on balancing industrial development with environmental sustainability and highlighted the need for urgent action to prevent further degradation.
HITO requested that if violations are identified, corrective measures should be implemented, alongside regular monitoring of ambient air quality in surrounding villages.
HITO said it expects an inquiry to be initiated at the earliest and has sought to be kept informed of the action taken.
