Shillong, Jul 2: Doctors from NEIGRIHMS’ Department of Cardiology performed a minimally invasive heart wall intervention on a 27-year-old woman who was suffering from a severe valve leakage and an intractable right sided heart failure.
This was a long-term after effect of open-heart surgery performed on the woman a decade earlier for a hole in the heart. A second open-heart surgery was fraught with high morbidity and mortality.
The multidisciplinary heart team at NEIGRIHMS, led by Cardiology head of department Dr Animesh Mishra, the supporting faculties Dr Manish Kapoor and Dr Amit Malviya, performed a successful trans-catheter tricuspid valve repair (TTVR) in close collaboration with the Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery and the Anaesthesia Departments.
This was also made possible by the technical support from Meril Life Sciences. The procedure took almost 3 hours and the patient is recovering fast in the Intensive Cardiac Care Unit (ICCU), NEIGRIHMS informed today through a press release.
This kind of operation has only been performed eight times in the entire country.
NEIGRIHMS cardiologists achieved the feat of performing such a procedure at a young age, which is a first in India. The hospital also said that the operation was performed at half the cost incurred elsewhere in India. “This has opened a vista for a large number of patients who are suffering from intractable heart failure due to leakage of valves in North East India,” NEIGRIHMS added.
Dr Mishra informed that “For these subsets of patients, conventional surgery carried an extremely high risk. By successfully performing this complex trans-catheter valve replacement, we were able to offer a life-saving, minimally invasive treatment that is available only at a few select centres across India.
Dr Nalin Mehta, Director of NEIGRIHMS, congratulated the multidisciplinary team and praised their commitment in delivering world-class yet affordable healthcare.
