Shillong, Jun 10: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), War Jaintia circle, in collaboration with the Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) West Jaintia Hills unit, conducted an inspection of trucks carrying goods from outside Meghalaya.
The groups stated that over 200 trucks had entered the district lacking proper trading licenses and permits.
KSU district unit president, Laitphar Syngkrem stated that this situation threatens employment opportunities for indigenous people. He said there is an urgent need for the implementation of the Inner Line Permit that could aid in controlling the entry of outsiders.
Syngkrem reiterated a call to the local community, urging residents not to provide shelter to those who disregard local laws and enter the area unauthorised.
FKJGP district general secretary Nangkhraw Rani expressed disappointment over the lack of action from the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council to regulate foreign trucks.
Rani highlighted that this issue not only jeopardizes the livelihood of local workers in the truck-driving sector but also undermines the integrity of local regulations.
