Shillong, Jul 25: The Commissionerate of Food Safety, Health and Family Welfare Department has urged citizens to avoid consuming wild mushrooms and to prevent chemical contamination of rivers, streams and other water sources during the monsoon.
Citing recurring cases of mushroom poisoning and erratic weather altering mushroom growth, the department said even traditionally safe varieties may now be toxic. People have been advised to buy only cultivated mushrooms from trusted sources.
The advisory also warned farmers and the public against using pesticides and washing sprayers near water bodies, saying runoff during heavy rain can contaminate drinking water.
The public has been asked to seek immediate medical help for symptoms of mushroom poisoning or chemical exposure. Deputy Commissioners, health officers, village authorities and community leaders have been asked to spread the advisory through announcements and campaigns.
The government appealed to citizens to remain vigilant and follow the safety guidelines to protect public health and water resources during the monsoon.
