Shillong, Jul 25: East Shillong MLA Ampareen Lyngdoh has cautioned opposition parties against using governance lapses as immediate grounds for protest, saying they should be mindful of the standards they set as similar issues could arise when they are in power.
Referring to the youth-led protest in Jantar Mantar, Lyngdoh said the resignation of the Union Education Minister was unprecedented and unexpected.
“While governing the state or Centre, omissions and commissions can occur. It is not in a party’s interest to just jump the line, because a similar incident can recur when they get there, if they get there,” she said.
Lyngdoh said opposition parties must stay relevant and raise issues, but also act responsibly as criticism “could boomerang back right on your own lap.”
Taking a swipe at Meghalaya’s opposition, she alleged the party was “already making a lot of errors in their own area of government.”
East Shillong MLA Ampareen Lyngdoh has cautioned opposition parties against “jumping on opportunities to protest” over governance issues, saying they should be wary of the standards they set as similar lapses could occur when they are in power.
“Before you point a finger at the central government, you need to figure out whether you are doing the correct things in your own government where you have the mandate,” she added.
Her remarks come amid continued criticism by opposition parties over governance issues at both state and central levels.
