Shillong, Jul 25: A 45-year-old woman was trampled to death by a wild elephant in West Garo Hills late Friday night, the latest in a series of human-elephant conflicts along the Assam-Meghalaya border.
The victim, identified as Rabha of Lahapara village in Belguri, died on the spot after a herd strayed into the village in search of food, causing panic among residents.
The incident has left Belguri and nearby border villages in shock. Locals said elephant incursions have become frequent, posing a recurring threat to lives, crops and property.
Forest officials have taken cognisance of the death. Authorities said the incident highlights the worsening human-elephant conflict in the West Garo Hills border belt.
Local groups have renewed calls for stronger mitigation measures, including early warning systems, better habitat management, and enhanced protection for villages along forest fringes.
