The Achik Holistic Awakening movement (AHAM), Kharkutta unit has urged the state government to renovate an upper primary school in Rongmatchu, North Garo Hills district.
The organisation said that during a visit to the school on August 13, it found that the school building is in a dilapidated state. “The school building including the veranda lay bare with no roof,” AHAM said.
From the classrooms to the teacher staff room, the leaking tin roof has caused untold miseries for the teachers and students who would often find books wet during the rains, the organisation said.
“Both the school students and teachers are facing hardships in teaching and learning especially during the rainy season and had approached local MLA Rupert Momin many times but to no avail,” AHAM said.
The organisation said it has made an appeal to the district mission coordinator requesting for assistance to repair the school building.
AHAM general secretary Amity Riprang Marak said the organisation is disappointed with the status of the school building. While the regional records low literacy rate, such conditions will further bring down the number of students who want to go to school.
