Landslides after heavy and persistent rain blocked National Highway 6 in East Jaiñtia Hills district, officials said.
Landslides at Ratacherra, Kuliang and Dona have left several vehicles stranded as traffic came to a total halt from 6:30 this morning. Till filing of this report works to clear to help restore traffic is underway.
The national highway 6 is an important link highway between Assam and Meghalaya and also connects Tripura, Mizoram and lower Assam (Barak Valley).
Officials said despite attempts by men and machines of the National Highway Authority of India to clear the road the task becomes impossible as mud turned slippery.
The heavy rains and landslide claimed the lives of three in the state so far.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted isolated extremely heavy to very heavy rainfall that will continue till May 16 due to strong south westerly winds from Bay of Bengal to northeast and adjoining east India at lower tropospheric levels.
According to the data collected on Saturday morning, Amlarem record 114.5 mm of rainfall, Khliehriat at 102.5 mm, Byrnihat 45.0 mm, Mairang 18.0mm, Sohra 202.6mm, Sohra RKM 205.6mm, Mawkyrwat 250.0 mm, Mawphlang 169.4mm, Baghmara 47.2 mm, Nongpoh 21.0 mm, Jowai 289.6 mm, Shillong 112.3 mm, Barapani 41.06 mm, ICAR Umiam 39.5mm
Meanwhile, strong winds accompanied by rains caused destruction to dozens of houses uprooted several trees, electric poles and crops in Malidor.
Villagers have sought help from the C&RD Block Wapung and urged the MeECL to restore power in the area.
