Shillong, Sep 2: The Meghalaya government must take the matter of the bar associations’ grievances against the state Advocate General seriously, Leader of the Opposition Dr Mukul Sangma said today.
The Shillong Bar Association and the High Court Bar Association have been abstaining from court proceedings over various grievances concerning the Advocate General Amit Kumar and the functioning of his office.
Dr Sangma said that the opposition expected the government to be clear through a statement during the recently-concluded Autumn session of the Assembly on the issue of lawyers’ grievances.
He raised the matter in the house to draw the attention of the government so that they can give information on the issue to the MLAs, vis-a-vis the stand of the government pertaining to the grievances of the lawyers.
However, Dr Sangma said that the house could not get clarity on the issue from the government but, as per media reports, the government is yet to take cognizance of the seriousness of the development.
“We have never seen in the history of Meghalaya this kind of unprecedented development involving the bar councils across the state, which has ramifications in the overall administration of justice and on governance,” Dr Sangma said, adding that the government is duty bound to look at these issues and resolve it at the earliest.
