The Department of Nutrition and Dietetics at Martin Luther Christian University organised a one day seminar on the theme ‘Today’s Food: Safety and Health’ at its Umsawli campus for the university students, with the objectives to sensitise and create an awareness on the importance of food safety to all.
The seminar was attended by faculty, staff and students from the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, Department of Tourism and Travel Management and the School of Language and Cultural Communication of the university. Rihokmika Rymbai, faculty of the department, presented the keynote address where she highlighted the recent rise of food poisoning, food borne illness cases in the country especially among the vulnerable groups leading to malnutrition.
The seminar was graced by TK Kharbamon, Vice-Chancellor of MLCU, as the chief guest and experts Wadamika Lyngdoh, who is the Deputy Commissioner Food Safety (Technical), and Majorica Warjri a renowned dietitian and freelancer.
Speaking as a chief guest, Kharbamon highlighted the need to look out for food that is safe for consumption.
Lyngdoh stressed on the need to be aware of the food that is available, when consumed and its consequences if it is an unsafe food. She stated “a food which is not safe is not food” as it deprives the body from the nutritional needs, compromising the immune system and leading to diseases thereby affecting the worklife and the wellbeing of the society as a whole.
The seminar concluded with a role play on ‘Safe food for all’ scripted and performed by the third semester BSc Food Science and Nutrition students.
