A family struggling to make ends meet were given a new home by their MLA, who reportedly used his own salary to cover the cost.
The family from Umshiaw village in Ri-Bhoi were handed the home yesterday by Mawhati MLA Charles Marngar, who was moved to act after being told of the family’s plight.
Emilda Nongrum and Clement Lyngdoh took possession of their new house, which replaced their old and dilapidated one. Church elders and the village headman were also present at the simple ceremony.
Speaking at the event, church elder B Shylla noted that since Meghalaya achieved statehood in 1972, this was likely the first instance in Umshiaw where an MLA directly provided such assistance.
Marngar, meanwhile, said that after learning about the family’s hardships, he felt compelled to act rather than merely express sympathy.
An emotional moment followed as the house was handed over, bringing tears of joy to the mother of the household, who never imagined receiving such support. Alongside the MLA’s contribution, several community members also donated household essentials, while the village headman and the Dorbar Shnong played an active role in the construction process.
This marks the second such initiative by Marngar, the first being in Liarbang village where he assisted Sunita Marbaniang and Phardingland Wahlang in January.
