A talk on ‘Media and Governance’ was organised by the Meghalaya Institute of Governance (MIG) here today, with editor of The Tribune, Rajesh Ramachandran, the speaker at the programme.
The event was graced by MIG Director General and senior civil servant Sampath Kumar, MIG Director Aiban Swer, prominent journalists Patricia Mukhim and David Laitphlang, representatives of all Shillong-based media houses and state government officials.
Ramachandran, in his speech, said that although the media is considered the fourth pillar of democracy, the Constitution is not eloquent about freedom of the press. However, because of the importance that society attaches to it, it has come to play a crucial role.
He also pointed out the necessity of freedom of the media as it facilitates transparency and dissemination of authentic information on public matters and stressed on the power of the media in its role in shaping the future and highlighted the evolution of the press from newspapers to TV channels to various digital platforms. Ramchandran also spoke about how public opinion is often manipulated and the role of the media lies entirely on the legitimacy of public opinion.
The talk ended with an interactive session amongst the attendees of the programme whereby discussions and ideas were exchanged.
