The Khasi Students Union, Nongmensong unit celebrated the 12th anniversary of its free education initiative aimed to provide education to under privilege children in the area.
An event was held yesterday which was attended by 28 children, who are availing education through the initiative, along with their parents.
Rangbah shnong of Nongmensong, Phrang Warjri who attended the celebration lauded the KSU for holding on to the initiative despite ups and downs. He also urged organisations to work hand in hand with the dorbar for the welfare of the people in the locality.
KSU education secretary Raymond Kharjana recalled that only five children were covered under the initiative when it started. With 28 children at present, he said there is still room for expansion as there are still many less privilege children in the locality.
KSU president Lambokstarwell Marngar said parents should not be discouraged if they cannot afford education for their children because the union through its small efforts will render help in times of need.
He also urged parents to be cautious and aware of substance abuse and they can have a significant influence by modelling responsible behaviours in their children.
During the programme, school uniforms and textbooks for the new session were distributed to the students.
