Shillong, Sep 27: A major fire was averted on Sunday after firefighters brought under control a blaze that broke out near Ajmera on GS Road, which damaged four shops including a restaurant.
No loss of life or injuries were reported.
Officer in charge of the Fire Station at Bara Bazar, Dinesh Rai, said the fire control room received a call from near the Ajmera building and a fire tender was immediately rushed to the spot.
Firefighters had to break open the tin roofing of the old structure to gain access and contain the flames. An additional team from another fire station was kept on standby.
The fire was brought under control in about 45 minutes.
Rai said the fire originated in one of the restaurants and spread to three adjoining shops. The restaurant suffered the most damage. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.
